P.O.E.D.: A Little Drug Tale (2003)

Aithe (2003)

Very refreshing and creative!
In these days when one wonders what exactly is attracting the masses to Thelugu movies, Aithe shows all the traits such as sane direction, nice plot, sane action, fresh faces, good music, and excellent direction as reasons why movies should attract crowds. Gangaraaju and Yeleti have done a wonderful job behind the camera while the protagonists, though new to the big screen, have done laudable action.
By staying away from cloyingly archaic trick of 5/6 songs, Gangaraaju & co. have done a great service to sane movie lovers. The only song in the movie is not only melodious but is very apt for the movie, a rarity in Indian movies.
This movie will go down in the history as a milestone but only time will tell if movie makers will try to treat it as a benchmark!

Starry-eyed and reckless, she enters a world of fantasy fueled by addiction and an abusive thirst for fame. Prey to the hidden agendas of those around him, Stu's fantasy world meets harsh reality in a head on collision that forces him to connect with Vicky. The record company needs a hit but Stu can't find the magic. Fate brought them together but will the music break them apart?
A decent movie revolving around dark satire and bad portrayals of rock star lifestyles.
It's not a bad movie per say if you manage to look at it from a humorous point of view. The technicals of the movie were decent, with relatively good cinematography and editing. In terms of BDSM, it's not that at all, I mean there is the gear but no real aspects of the culture are portrayed. No consent, which is the main factor, no power exchange and a dismal portrayal of the after effects. It's almost amusing how wrong they were in their portrayal. There was however, a very surreal feel to the whole movie, that being a huge redeeming factor and lets not forget the dark humour. Practically the whole movie has this deep/dark undertone of satire which makes it somewhat entertaining to watch. The storyline was there though it was a bit weak ending with a few unanswered questions. Overall I'd say it's a pretty good watch if you're not looking to take it seriously. I don't regret watching it but if you don't need to spend money on it that would make it a whole lot better.

Los debutantes (2003)

Parents, children, brothers. A few days in Santiago, Chile, seen by three different characters: Víctor, a schoolboy who develops a crush on a stripper he sees at a club on his birthday; Silvio, Victor's older brother, hired by the club owner to be his driver and who also falls for the woman; and, Gracia, the stripper who's the boss's girlfriend and who wants out. The club owner, Don Pasqual, has many illegal enterprises and a bad heart. Víctor's impulsive puppy love, Silvio's libido, Gracia's plans, and Don Pasqual's possessiveness make for a dangerous mix.
Spiraling Down the Sink Hole of Chile's Underground
Director/writer Andrés Waissbluth worked seven years to complete this two hour film about the crime underground in Santiago, Chile, and perhaps that is one of the reasons the resultant film seems episodic and in need of editing. OR, maybe this is the technique of a director who shows a fine sense of film noir storytelling.
Two brothers - Silvio the elder (Néstor Cantillana) and Victor the younger (Juan Pablo Miranda) - have moved to Santiago from their home in Temuco after their parents' death and Silvio works to support Victor's education. On Victor's seventeenth birthday Silvio takes the virgin out to the clubs where he encourages Victor to lose his virginity with one of the club's stripper/prostitutes. In a tender scene Victor must face his nascent impotency while Silvio is out on the club floor impressing the 'owners' with his potential for hire.
Silvio goes to work for the 'gang' as a bodyguard/henchman and makes good money to support Victor's schooling. But Victor has eyes for one of the dancers at the club named Gracia (Antonella Ríos) and begins to woo her, dropping out of school incurring Silvio's angry disappointment. Gracia just happens to be the squeeze of the club gang's leader Don Pascual (Alejandro Trejo) who is Silvio's boss! Gracia is the glue that holds this tale together as she is the paramour of Victor, Silvio, and Don Pascual and the consequences of this bizarre ménage a trois has deadly results. Through a means of re-telling the story through the eyes of Victor, Silvio, and Gracia we grow to understand the vulnerabilities and the cracks in each character that allow for the downfall that results.
Sound like a Chilean Pulp Fiction? Well, it is and it is filmed in a brutally colorful, dark manner that includes a lot of frontal nudity (both female and male) and provocative sexual encounters. But in the end the sensual aspect of the director's vision is what drives this film, playing on the debutante virginal psyche against the hardcore professional sex worker with success. The cast is fairly strong, especially Antonella Ríos in the demanding role of Gracia. There are enough twists and turns and replays of incidents you think you understood the first viewing but that change dramatically in impact when told through the eyes of a different character. Bordering on two hours, some judicious editing would have helped the impact of the film. In Spanish with English subtitles. Recommended for those who like the edgy film noir style and the art of South American cinema. Grady Harp

The Last Kennedy (2003)

This compelling and disturbing psychological drama tracks the lives of Walter Lee Fitzgerald and his wife Linda through a government conspiracy centered on changing the outcome of a future presidential election. The film weaves its way through the minds of the pawns who would change history, the candidate at risk and the conspirators manipulating the buttons. As told by Linda Fitzgerald, unwittingly used in the plot, this haunting and gripping American tragedy transcends mere film going and becomes an experience that can't be forgotten.
Better than The Manchurian Candidate
This is an amazing film for several reasons. First is the presentation. The Last Kennedy tracks what could be any man. It doesn't take a huge star, big budget nor special effects to carry its message on a grassroots level. Second is the acting, excellent performances all around with Culver himself deserving an award for his final scene. Third the quality alone speaks for itself. Projected on the big screen this digital format is as good or better than 35mm. I highly recommend The Last Kennedy; it makes The Manchurian Candidate look like a walk in the park. Its message is powerful and well delivered, and it is highly deserving of domestic release.
Buppha Rahtree (2003)

Hilarious and frightening homage to The Exorcist.
RAHTREE: Flower of the Night is a Thai Horror-Comedy about a girl named Buppah Rahtree, who through a series of unfortunate events, ends up bleeding to death and haunting an apartment building full of weirdos.
Though the film is more comedy than horror, with lots of ridiculous laughs throughout, there are easily over a dozen scenes where the entire audience jumps. The director Yuthlert Sippapak is admittedly in love with the movie The Exorcist and pays a hilarious homage to it in this film. The director even pokes fun at himself when he has one of the characters in the movie complain that people are stupid because they only watch movies where a ghost chases someone down a hallway. Ha ha.
The director also hinted that he is working on a sequel, involving some bank robbers that end up in the room Rahtree haunts. Funny and genuinely scary with a sprinkling of original ideas, I'd highly recommend Rahtree. (8/10)
Spook (2003)

Based on the chilling true story of 'Kick' a Canadian who operated as a sniper for the CIA in Vietnam, and his personal post-war mission to expose the Canadian government's covert involvement in the war, and the 40,000 Canadians who secretly served there.
Not great.
I went to a screening of Spook in Vancouver on April 9th at the Havana. We had seen a very appealing ad in a newspaper, showing the movie. Seeing that it has won awards and was controversial, we were interested to see it. It was a disappointment. My husband and I were not impressed. It was actually painful to sit through. We found the movie very long and very boring at times. This is something that could never be mass produced or shown in a commercial theatre. People would just not pay the money. It was drawn out and very hard to follow at times. The lighting throughout the movie was terrible. When the lights came on at the end, it was a great relief. The lead role acting was OK. I would not waste your time viewing this.
G@me (2003)

A 'kidnapper' holds a girl hostage until a ransom demand is paid from her father. In reality, the kidnapper is actually an advertiser, who has been beaten to a 3 billion deal and so takes his Rival's daughter hostage. The girl later turns out to be more than she seems and turns into a handful for her 'kidnapper'...
Well thought out plot
G@me is a well crafted suspense drama of deception where battle of the minds takes the story to its climax.
The movie is about selfishness, and confidence each of the character has on their intelligence to pull off the deception. Who's in control, is one of the intriguing aspects of the story. Is love stronger than greed in the end ?
In today's Japanese society where performance in money making ability is king, this movie shows a cross section of its society where one will go any length to get the business and money at their job. The cruelty of each of the character in this movie shows how deep people are willing to go to achieve this goal.
The story was good, but I couldn't get into the cruelness of the characters. This kind of took away from the story. But I guess a story had to be made that's (almost) totally dependent on the mind game of the characters.
If you like good plots, and complex strategies, this movie is for you.

artistic and satisfying
A man painting on a corpse is arrested and charged as a serial killer, a charge he does not deny. Thus the defense attorney has what seems to be not a winnable case. Certain events suggest to him that the accused was tormented by a past life and that the real culprit lies beyond the grave. He bases his case on the supernatural, a case which the prosecutor spares no energy in picking apart. After all a defense based on concepts such as reincarnation does not set well in our modern world. This much is apparent early in the film, and I'll just mention a few things, not to spoil the film (much more to it than just this) but to help it make sense. Think of lives having interconnections with each other and the past in ways not commonly understood. Think of redemption, of desires that find a reality. Think of the irony of destroying that which is most precious. Think of torrid love, of tender love, of self-sacrifice, of some meaning to life. Think of a circle. If you just want simple entertainment or to watch a film while taking trips to the refrigerator, this film may very well not make sense. But if you appreciate artistic films and don't mind getting engrossed in a film and don't mind concentrating and thinking at the same time, then you may find this film satisfying. It made sense to me. Music was well chosen and hauntingly beautiful. The story, characters, direction - all well done.
